Terms of Service
These terms are an agreement between you and the operator of trill. Please read them; we’ve tried to keep them short and clear.
1. Who we are and what these terms cover
trill is operated by Chih-Hsuan Mei, a sole proprietor (“trill”, “we”, “us”). These terms cover trill.ing, app.trill.ing, the trill Chrome extension, the trill iOS app and the trill desktop app (together, the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service.
2. Your account
- You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age for digital consent where you live if that’s higher. If you’re under 18, you need a parent or guardian’s permission.
- An account is for one person. Keep your sign-in secure; you’re responsible for what happens under your account.
- Give us an email address you can receive mail at. We use it to sign you in and for important notices about the Service.
3. What trill does
trill helps you learn languages from the shows and videos you watch. It records the audio you choose, transcribes it, and uses AI to turn it into study material. We’re always improving trill, so features may change, be added or be removed.
4. Your content is yours
You own what you record and create in trill: recordings, transcripts, notes, collections and study material (“Your Content”). You give us a limited permission to store, process and transmit Your Content, including sending it to the providers on our Subprocessors page, only to run the Service for you. We don’t share or publish Your Content, and no other user can see it.
You’re responsible for having the right to record and use what you capture with trill.
5. Personal study only
The Service is for your own personal, non-commercial language study. When you record with trill, you agree to:
- record only content you’re allowed to access, and keep following the terms of the services you watch it on;
- not upload, publish, sell, distribute or share recordings, transcripts or clips made with trill;
- not use trill to download, archive or make copies of shows, or to get around copy protection;
- not record conversations or other people without the consent the law requires (see Recording responsibly).
6. Acceptable use
Don’t misuse the Service. In particular, don’t:
- break the law or infringe anyone’s rights;
- try to access another person’s account or data, or probe, scan or attack our systems;
- reverse engineer the Service, except where the law allows it;
- use bots, scripts or shared accounts to get around plan limits, or resell access to the Service;
- interfere with the Service or put an unreasonable load on it.
7. AI-generated material
Transcripts, translations, explanations, readings and levels are generated automatically and can be wrong. Use them as study aids, not as authoritative or professional advice, and double-check anything important.
8. Plans, billing and trials
- Plans. trill has a free plan and paid plans, billed monthly or yearly. Current prices and limits are on our pricing page. Prices are in US dollars and include tax where tax applies.
- Who you pay. On the web, payments are processed by Stripe, which sells the subscription to you as merchant of record. In the iOS app, payments go through Apple and the App Store’s terms apply.
- Renewal. Paid plans renew automatically at the end of each period until you cancel. You can cancel anytime; your plan stays active until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
- Trials. A free trial, where offered, is one per account. On the web it lasts 7 days, and you’ll be charged when it ends unless you cancel first. On iOS, Apple’s introductory-offer rules apply.
- Changes. Upgrades and downgrades on the web are prorated. If we change a price, we’ll tell you in advance, and the new price applies from your next renewal.
- Refunds. Payments are non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise. If something went wrong, email support@trill.ing within 14 days of the charge and we’ll make it right. Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple. If you’re in the EU or UK, you may also have a right to withdraw from a purchase within 14 days; by using a paid plan during that time you ask us to start right away, and a refund may be reduced for the time you used.
- Limits. Each plan has limits, such as sessions per month and session length. We may also limit use that is unusually heavy compared with normal personal study.
- Family sharing. Where a plan includes family sharing, the plan is shared, not content. Every member has their own private account.
9. Other services
The Service works with services we don’t control, such as Google and Apple sign-in, the Chrome Web Store, the App Store and the streaming sites you watch. Their terms apply to your use of them, and we’re not responsible for them.
10. Our property
The Service, including its software, design and the trill name and logo, belongs to us. We give you a personal, non-transferable, revocable license to use it under these terms. If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them freely without owing you anything.
11. Ending your use
You can stop using trill at any time and ask us to delete your account by emailing support@trill.ing. We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if the law requires it, or to protect the Service or other people. Where reasonable, we’ll tell you first. Sections that by their nature should survive (such as 4, 10, 12–15) continue after your account closes.
12. Disclaimers
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no warranties, express or implied, including that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for a particular purpose, or that transcripts and study material will be accurate. Some places don’t allow these exclusions, so some of them may not apply to you.
13. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, profits or revenue. Our total liability for any claim about the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and US $50. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law.
14. Indemnity
If someone brings a claim against us because of Your Content or because you broke these terms or the law, such as by recording a person without consent or sharing a recording, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of that claim, to the extent the law allows.
15. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be handled by the state or federal courts in King County, Washington, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim in your local courts. If you’re a consumer, you keep the protections that your local law guarantees.
16. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as trill changes. We’ll post the new version here and update the date at the top. For changes that matter, we’ll tell you by email or in the app before they take effect. If you keep using trill after that, you accept the new terms.
17. Contact
Questions about these terms? Email support@trill.ing. These terms are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest still applies, and our not enforcing a term isn’t a waiver of it.
